Bitdefender Review (October 2026): Plans, Prices and Renewal Catch

The verdict: Bitdefender is one of the safest antivirus picks you can make, but the lab evidence does not separate it from most of its rivals, so the buying decision is about price and fine print. In AV-TEST’s August 2026 Windows round, Bitdefender Total Security scored a perfect 6/6/6, and so did 11 of the other 14 products. The price that matters is the one you pay after year one: Total Security is $59.99 for the first year with five devices, and Bitdefender’s own terms say the struck-through “old price” ($109.99) is what each later year can look like. The bundled VPN on every plan below Premium is capped at 200 MB a day.

Plans, prices, renewal and refund terms were read on Bitdefender’s own pages on October 20, 2026. Lab results come from AV-TEST’s August 2026 Windows table and AV-Comparatives’ Summary Report 2025, both linked below. We do not test antivirus products ourselves, so this page makes no claim about how Bitdefender performs on your computer.

Plans and first-year prices

Bitdefender sells four main consumer tiers in the US. The figures below are the first-year prices shown on each product page on October 20, 2026, before sales tax, with the struck-through “old price” beside them. Sale prices on Bitdefender’s site change often, so treat this as a dated snapshot.

Bar chart of First-year price for Antivirus Plus, Antivirus Plus, Total Security, Total Security Family, Premium Security, Ultimate Security
First-year price, as listed in the table above.

The per-device cost is the clearest way to read this. Total Security at $59.99 for five devices is about $12 a device in year one; Antivirus Plus at $24.99 for one device is double that per device. The one-device plan only makes sense for a single computer. Prices come from Bitdefender’s pages for Antivirus Plus, Total Security, Premium Security and Ultimate Security. Each page also has a two-year toggle on some tiers; we did not record those figures.

The renewal catch

This is the part most reviews skip. Every product page carries the same notice: “The price offered is valid for the first year of subscription. After that, your subscription will be billed at the applicable renewal price which may be higher than the initial purchase price.” Bitdefender does not print the renewal price next to the plan, but it does explain what the discount badge means: “If a discount is presented, it describes the difference between the first term and renewal term subscription prices (e.g., first year price vs. each year thereafter).”

Read that carefully. It says the badge compares the first-year price with the price for each year thereafter. On that reading, the struck-through figure is the likely renewal price: about $109.99 a year for Total Security with five devices, against $59.99 in year one. That is our inference from Bitdefender’s wording, not a printed renewal quote, so confirm the exact figure in your order confirmation or in Bitdefender Central before you pay.

The terms also say Bitdefender will email you before an automatic renewal with the pricing, and that you can switch auto-renewal off in Bitdefender Central or by emailing cancel@bitdefender.com. Both are worth acting on in the first week: put a reminder in your calendar a month before the year ends.

What the independent labs say

We do not run detection tests. Two independent labs publish them, and we report what they published.

AV-TEST, August 2026

AV-TEST’s Windows 11 home-user table says that during July and August 2026 it evaluated 15 products at default settings. Each product can earn up to 6 points for protection, performance and usability, 18 in total, and 10 or more earns the AV-TEST seal. Bitdefender Total Security 27.0 scored 6, 6 and 6. So did AhnLab, Avast, AVG, Avira, ESET, F-Secure, K7, Kaspersky, Malwarebytes, McAfee and Norton: 12 of the 15 products had a perfect score. The three that did not were EnigmaSoft’s SpyHunter (5.5 protection), Microsoft Defender (5.5 performance) and TotalAV (5.5 performance).

That last point matters. A perfect AV-TEST score is real evidence that Bitdefender is good, but it is not evidence that it is better than Norton, Kaspersky or the free Avast. It also shows that Microsoft’s built-in Defender scored 6 on protection and 6 on usability in the same round, losing half a point on performance only.

AV-Comparatives, 2025

AV-Comparatives’ Summary Report 2025 covers 19 Windows products over a full year. It names Bitdefender among seven Top-Rated Product winners (Avast, AVG, Bitdefender, ESET, G Data, Kaspersky and Norton). Bitdefender Total Security received five Advanced+ awards, one Advanced and one Standard across seven tests, plus the Silver Award for the Real-World Protection Test. It was also named among the products that scored well in both Malware Protection tests.

Two caveats. The product AV-Comparatives and AV-TEST tested was Total Security, so we found no lab report for Antivirus Plus on its own, and we cannot verify that the cheaper plan performs identically. And both labs test Windows; neither result tells you how the macOS, Android or iOS apps compare. Bitdefender’s own line that it has the “best antivirus protection in the industry, as proven by the last 10 years of independent test scores” is a vendor claim, and the labs do not rank products that way.

The bundled VPN: 200 MB a day

Antivirus Plus and Total Security include a “Standard VPN” limited to 200 MB a day per device. Bitdefender’s Total Security FAQ puts it as “200 MB/day, a total of 6GB/month”. That is enough for a short session such as checking email on public Wi-Fi, and not much more. Treat it as a convenience for short sessions, not as a privacy tool.

Unlimited VPN traffic starts at Premium Security ($79.99 first year, five devices). Bitdefender also sells a standalone Premium VPN, whose page lists unlimited encrypted traffic on up to 10 devices, more than 3,000 servers in 100+ countries and a “strict no-logs policy”. Those are vendor statements; we did not find an independent audit of the no-logs claim on that page. If a VPN is your main need, compare it with the dedicated services in our VPN comparison and read why free and capped VPNs deserve caution.

Password manager, scam protection and identity cover

Password manager. Total Security and above include a password manager. Bitdefender’s page calls it “ultra-secure” and “feature-rich”; we have not seen an independent audit of it. If you want one with a published audit and clear pricing, see our best password managers comparison.

Scam protection. Every plan lists “core protection against scams”, blocking phishing and fake shops. Premium Security and above add “Scam Protection Pro”, described as AI-powered and covering email, chat, SMS and web scams. How well it works is not something we can verify, and we found no independent test of it.

Identity cover. Ultimate Security adds Digital Identity Protection. The page states the identity-theft insurance and credit reports are part of Ultimate Security Plus and need a valid Social Security Number, so it is a US-only feature: up to $1 million of cover and one credit bureau on Standard, up to $2 million and three bureaus on Extended. It also lists reimbursement of up to $25,000 for ransomware or social-engineering losses. Insurance terms, exclusions and what counts as a covered loss are in the policy documents, which we have not read; read them before you rely on the cover.

Trial, cancellation and refunds

  • Trial. The Total Security page offers a free 30-day trial and says no credit card is required.
  • Refund. “You may obtain a refund by contacting refunds@bitdefender.com within 30 days of your initial purchase or of the automatic renewal date.” That second half matters: a surprise renewal charge is refundable for 30 days, per the page.
  • Cancel. Through Bitdefender Central, or by emailing cancel@bitdefender.com.
  • Renewal reminders. Starting 30 days before expiry you get emails about the next steps.

The same notice says features and services “may be added, modified or removed” under the subscription agreement, so the plan you buy today is not guaranteed to be identical in a year.

Bitdefender versus the alternatives

On the numbers we can source, the picture is this. Norton, Kaspersky, McAfee, ESET, Avast and others also scored 6/6/6 in AV-TEST’s August 2026 round, and several share Bitdefender’s AV-Comparatives Top-Rated status. A free option, Microsoft Defender, scored 17.5 of 18. Paying for Bitdefender therefore buys you the extras (a password manager, a capped VPN, parental controls, identity tools) and a more consistent track record across both labs, not a unique level of malware blocking.

What we like and what to watch out for

What we like

  • Top-Rated at AV-Comparatives for 2025 and a perfect 6/6/6 at AV-TEST in August 2026, on the Total Security product.
  • Clear device-count tiers, including a 25-device family plan.
  • A 30-day refund window that also applies to renewals.
  • One account covers Windows, macOS, Android and iOS.

Watch out for

  • The first-year price is not the price. Bitdefender says discounts compare year one with later years; expect the struck-through figure at renewal.
  • The VPN on cheaper plans is capped at 200 MB a day.
  • The tested product was Total Security. We found no lab report for Antivirus Plus alone.
  • Identity insurance is US-only, needs an SSN and sits on the Plus tier. Policy terms were not read.
  • Auto-renew is on by default.

What Bitdefender can’t do

It cannot make a weak password strong, stop you handing a code to a scammer or remove your information from data-broker sites. It does not replace a router that gets security updates, two-factor authentication or backups. Lab scores measure malware blocking on test machines; they do not measure how well a scam call or a convincing fake login page will work on you. For account security, a hardware key does more than any antivirus: see our best hardware security keys.

Who should buy it, and who should skip it

Buy Total Security if you have several devices across Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, want one subscription and a password manager, and you are prepared to check the renewal price or cancel and re-buy at the new-customer price each year. The five-device plan is the best value on the page.

Buy Premium Security if you actually want an unlimited VPN bundled in; otherwise the extra $20 over Total Security buys features we cannot independently assess.

Skip it if you only use one Windows PC and are happy with Microsoft Defender, which scored 17.5 of 18 in the same AV-TEST round, or if you want a serious VPN, where a dedicated service is the better fit. Skip it, too, if a price rise after year one would annoy you and you will not set a reminder.

How we researched this review

We read Bitdefender’s product pages for Antivirus Plus, Total Security, Premium Security and Ultimate Security (including the subscription and renewal notice on each), its company page and its VPN page, plus AV-TEST’s August 2026 Windows table and AV-Comparatives’ Summary Report 2025, all on October 20, 2026. That is six Bitdefender pages and two lab publications. We do not test antivirus products ourselves and have not installed Bitdefender for this review. We could not verify the exact renewal prices, the two-year prices, the standalone Premium VPN price, the password manager’s independent security record, the VPN’s no-logs claim or the identity-insurance policy terms. Prices and plans change, so confirm them on the vendor’s page on the day you buy.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Bitdefender cost?

On October 20, 2026, the first-year prices on Bitdefender’s pages were $24.99 (Antivirus Plus, one device), $59.99 (Total Security, five devices), $79.99 (Premium Security) and $89.99 (Ultimate Security). Renewal can be higher.

Does the price go up after the first year?

Bitdefender’s pages say the offered price is valid for the first year and the renewal price “may be higher”. They also say the discount shown compares the first-year price with later years, which points to the struck-through price as the renewal price.

Is Bitdefender good?

The labs say yes. AV-TEST gave Total Security 6/6/6 in August 2026, and AV-Comparatives named it a 2025 Top-Rated Product. Most major rivals scored similarly.

Is Bitdefender better than Microsoft Defender?

In AV-TEST’s August 2026 round Bitdefender scored 18 of 18 and Defender 17.5 of 18. The gap is half a point, in performance.

Does Bitdefender include a VPN?

Yes. Antivirus Plus and Total Security include a VPN limited to 200 MB a day per device. Unlimited traffic starts at Premium Security.

Can I get a refund?

Per Bitdefender’s page, yes: contact refunds@bitdefender.com within 30 days of your initial purchase or of an automatic renewal.

How do I cancel Bitdefender?

From Bitdefender Central, or by emailing cancel@bitdefender.com. Auto-renewal is on if you enrolled at purchase.

Does Bitdefender work on Mac, Android and iPhone?

Its pages list Windows, macOS, Android and iOS. The labs we cite test Windows, so we cannot report independent results for the other platforms.

Bottom line

Bitdefender Total Security earns its reputation: perfect marks at AV-TEST in August 2026 and a Top-Rated award at AV-Comparatives for 2025. It is not the only product that does, and the first-year price is a teaser. Buy the five-device plan if you want the bundle, assume you will pay roughly the struck-through price at renewal, and set a reminder before the year ends.
